Josephson junction mixer using an external local oscillator
نویسنده
چکیده
2014 Mixing experiments on niobium point contacts are reported for conversion from 95 GHz to 140 MHz. The conversion efficiency is less than predicted by the highly damped weak link model. The discrepancy is presumably due to mixing with higher harmonics of the local oscillator. The lowest noise temperature measured was T ~ 100 K which is of the same order as recently reported for cooled Schottky-barrier diodes. REVUE DE PHYSIQUE APPLIQUÉE TOME 9, JANVIER 1974, PAGE

Frequency conversion with superconducting point contacts operating as oscillator-mixers and its application to the measurement of the linewidth of the Josephson current at very high frequency
2014 The Josephson frequency conversion in the millimeter and submillimeter wave region is studied with superconducting Nb-Nb point contact junctions at 4.2 K, using the contact both as the local oscillator and the mixer with intermediate frequencies of 0.1 and 9.2 GHz. Frequency conversion signals are only detected in the latter case with a microwave receiver at 9.2 GHz in a range of Josephson...

2014 Experiments were carried out to investigate the performance of a heterodyne detector at 891 GHz using a cw hydrogen cyanide laser as the local oscillator and Nb-Nb point contact Josephson junctions as mixing devices. Using a second off-tuned HCN laser as the signal, intermediate frequencies (IF’s) up to a few MHz could be studied. Both pre-set and adjustable types of junction were used, an...
متن کاملLow Noise SIS Mixer for Far Infrared Radio Astronomy
We present a low noise SIS mixer developed for the 1.2 THz band of the heterodyne spectrometer of the Herschel Space Observatory. The device of this design will be among the first SIS mixers flown in space at Herschel. The developed SIS mixer has a quasi-optical design, with a double slot planar antenna and an extended spherical lens made of pure Si. The SIS junctions are Nb/AlN/NbTiN with the ...
متن کاملTowards a Phase-Locked Superconducting Integrated Receiver: Prospects and Limitations
Presently a Josephson Flux Flow Oscillator (FFO) appears to be the most developed superconducting on-chip local oscillator for integrated submm-wave SIS receivers. The feasibility of phase locking the FFO to an external reference oscillator at all frequencies of interest has to be proven for practical FFO implementation in radio astronomy and other spectral applications. A linewidth of a phase-...
متن کاملSpectral analysis of a phase locked laser at 891 GHz, an application of Josephson junctions in the far infrared
2014 We have used a Josephson junction to investigate the spectral purity of an HCN laser which is used in an infrared frequency synthesis chain. To obtain a narrower linewidth from the laser it has been phase locked to a multiplied microwave reference chain. A calculated value for this linewidth was based upon the measured noise spectrum of the microwave source and a theory due to Middleton. O...
